Smriti Irani on Bollywood’s Silence on Op Sindoor: “Don’t Watch Them If You’re Hurt”

adminBy adminJuly 24, 2025

Union Minister Smriti Irani has spoken out strongly against Bollywood’s silence on the recently launched Operation Sindoor, calling out the industry’s apathy towards national issues. Irani, known for her forthright views, addressed the media during a cultural event in Delhi and responded sharply when asked about the absence of statements or support from film personalities regarding the operation.

“Why are we always expecting Bollywood to speak? If you’re hurt by their silence, don’t watch their movies. Simple,” Irani remarked, sparking both support and debate online.

Operation Sindoor, a high-risk counterterror initiative launched in July 2025 by Indian armed forces, has received praise from various political leaders and citizens. However, the entertainment industry, usually vocal about social causes, has remained largely quiet, which hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Irani suggested that patriotism should not be measured by celebrity endorsements. “The jawans on the border are not risking their lives for actors to post an Instagram story. If someone feels Bollywood’s silence is problematic, they have the power as citizens — don’t buy tickets, don’t stream,” she added.

Her statement comes amid rising public sentiment urging popular figures to take clearer stances on national security operations. While some actors like Akshay Kumar and Kangana Ranaut have posted vague supportive messages, most of the industry has stayed mum.

Irani’s bold remarks have reignited the debate about whether celebrities have a responsibility to comment on national matters — or whether silence, too, is a statement.
