Ajay Devgn’s much-anticipated action-comedy Son of Sardaar 2 finds itself in a tough spot at the box office, caught in the crossfire of two mega-hits dominating theatres — Ahaan Panday’s Saiyaara and Prabhas-starrer Mahavatar Narishimha. Despite being backed by a loyal fan base and nostalgia from the 2012 original, the sequel is struggling to claim space amidst this cinematic clash of titans.

Released just a week after Saiyaara’s dream run began, Son of Sardaar 2 entered theatres on July 26 with high hopes. However, Saiyaara has continued to hold its ground with massive footfalls even into its third week, crossing the ₹300 crore mark with ease. Meanwhile, Mahavatar Narishimha, a VFX-heavy spiritual action epic, has attracted mass audiences across single screens and multiplexes alike, leaving little room for other films to shine.
Trade analyst Girish Johar notes, “Son of Sardaar 2 has good humour and solid action set-pieces, but its timing couldn’t have been worse. With Saiyaara still pulling Gen-Z crowds and Mahavatar Narishimha attracting the family and devotional audiences, SOS 2 feels squeezed from both sides.”
Even strong promotional efforts — including Devgn’s aggressive media rounds and cameo buzz from Sanjay Dutt — haven’t translated into box office numbers. Opening weekend collections barely touched ₹18 crore, far below expectations for a big-budget franchise.
Social media reactions reflect a mix of admiration and fatigue. While die-hard fans of Ajay Devgn call the film “pure paisa-vasool,” others argue it feels “dated” and “overpowered by better content in theatres.”
Unless Son of Sardaar 2 finds breathing room in the coming week, it may join the list of sequels that faltered despite star power. Meanwhile, Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narishimha continue to script box office history — one with youthful romance, the other with divine might.
