Ashneer Grover on Hosting: ‘I’m Not Here to Copy Salman Khan’

adminBy adminSeptember 10, 2025

Ashneer Grover, best known for his bold persona on Shark Tank India, is stepping into uncharted territory—as the host of the reality series Rise & Fall on MX Player. His entry into this high-stakes game show invites inevitable comparisons with Bollywood heavyweight Salman Khan, who has become synonymous with reality TV through his long stint hosting Bigg Boss. But Ashneer is quick to make one thing clear: he’s not here to emulate Salman, he’s here to bring his own brand of sharp commentary and distinct style.

The Comparison: Unavoidable but Unwanted

In an interview, Grover acknowledged the unavoidable comparisons with Salman Khan. “Salman has been doing a great job for last so many years,” he said, pointing out how networks have gravitated towards Salman’s charisma despite rotating judges on Bigg Boss. Yet, Ashneer is keen to stress his differences: “It seems surreal to be compared with him. But people like to put you in boxes… This is the reality show box. So, obviously, there are going to be comparisons.”

He added, “I’m here to have fun. I’m not from the industry. So, there’s no pressure on me. I’m not a trained actor. I’m here because somewhere there’s an audience for the brutality and curtness that I bring to the show. It should be different.” His emphasis on being unabashedly direct—a trait that defines his public persona—sets him apart from the seasoned host.

Not a Salman Clone—and Proud of It

Ashneer does not shy away from affirming that he is not trying to mimic Salman Khan’s style. “I don’t want to be him. … He has his own audience. Hopefully, there’s a big enough audience for what we are going to bring to the show,” Ashneer said. His aim is to attract viewers who appreciate edgier hosting and direct confrontation, rather than the empathetic, ‘Bigg Boss-style’ warmth Salman represents.

Turning Down Bigg Boss Offers—Twice

Adding another layer to the contrast between himself and Salman, Ashneer revealed that he’s had multiple offers to join Bigg Boss, but turned them down. “I have been offered the show seven to eight times. I would not go because it doesn’t appeal to me.” He even joked that he would only consider participation if he were paid more than Salman—a tongue-in-cheek exaggeration that speaks to both his confidence and his unwillingness to be taken lightly in the reality TV space.

Rise & Fall: A Different Reality Game

Rise & Fall taps into themes of social hierarchy and survival, not unlike Bigg Boss, but with distinct mechanics. It’s less about emotional drama and more about strategic gameplay—contestants are split between ‘Rulers’ (living luxuriously) and ‘Workers’ (struggling for survival and influence). Ashneer, as host, intentionally maintains a distance—presenting himself less as a mentor and more as a detached game observer, contrasting sharply with Salman’s familial ‘big brother’ style.

The Public Persona: Bold, Unfiltered, Controversial

Ashneer’s persona, built over seasons on Shark Tank India, relies on fearless candidness—sharp one-liners, unfiltered critique, and quick wit. It’s no surprise then that he finds a niche in a format like Rise & Fall, where calculated cuts and authority can shape the game’s tone.

Meanwhile, the internet continues to associate him with Salman Khan—especially after their viral clash on Bigg Boss 18 and the subsequent controversies. But Ashneer insists there’s no lingering animosity. “There were no hard feelings,” he said, describing the media frenzy around their interaction as necessary drama for TRPs.

Why Ashneer’s Entry Matters

  1. Reality TV Gets a Sharp Twist: Ashneer brings a businessperson’s unfiltered approach to a genre often dominated by flamboyance or emotional sentiment.

  2. A Strategic Host Amid Power Plays: In a format where contestants battle for wealth and influence, a host with a no-nonsense style becomes an enforcer of tone and pace.

  3. Fresh Energy vs. Legacy Format: While Salman’s style is established and nostalgic, Ashneer brings something new—potentially engaging viewers who want realism over dramatics.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Ashneer’s new venture comes with challenges. His blunt style may appeal to niche audiences, but it risks alienating those accustomed to traditional, emotionally-driven hosting. Moreover, Rise & Fall still invites direct comparison with Bigg Boss—and Ashneer’s success may depend on whether viewers perceive him as a worthy, unique alternative or just an echo in a proven format.

Final Thoughts

Ashneer Grover is clear: he’s not here to be a clone. He’s here to be himself—brutally candid, strategically metered, and unapologetically unique. As Rise & Fall unfolds on MX Player and Sony TV, audiences will determine whether his style resonates in a format craving fresh energy.
