Kamal Haasan’s ‘Hindia’ jab at BJP amid language row, backs Stalin on delimitation

adminBy adminMarch 5, 2025

Actor and politician Kamal Haasan recently criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for attempting to impose Hindi on non-Hindi-speaking states, coining the term “Hindia” to describe this perceived agenda. He expressed these views during an all-party meeting convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to discuss the proposed parliamentary constituency delimitation based on population.

Opposition to Hindi Imposition

Haasan accused the BJP of trying to create “Hindia,” suggesting that the central government’s push for the three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP) is an attempt to impose Hindi on southern states. He argued that such measures undermine India’s federal principles and disrespect the linguistic diversity that defines the nation. Highlighting Tamil pride, Haasan warned against underestimating Tamilians’ attachment to their mother tongue, referencing past agitations where people sacrificed their lives for the language.

Stance on Delimitation

Regarding the proposed delimitation exercise, Haasan voiced concerns that it would disproportionately affect non-Hindi-speaking states like Tamil Nadu, which have successfully implemented population control measures. He argued that these states should not be penalized for their efforts, as reducing their parliamentary representation would be unjust. Haasan questioned the necessity of altering the number of Members of Parliament, emphasizing that the current system functions effectively and aligns with democratic and federal principles.

Support for Chief Minister Stalin

Haasan endorsed Chief Minister Stalin’s proposal to base the delimitation exercise on the 1971 Census for the next 30 years. He supported the idea of forming a committee comprising Members of Parliament and representatives from southern states to coordinate a unified response to the delimitation issue. This collective approach aims to ensure that the voices of southern states are adequately represented and that their interests are safeguarded in the face of potential changes to parliamentary constituencies.

Historical Context

This is not the first time Haasan has spoken out against Hindi imposition. In 2019, he warned that any attempt to impose Hindi could lead to protests larger than the Jallikattu demonstrations, emphasizing that such moves would be detrimental to national unity. He stressed the importance of respecting all languages while maintaining pride in one’s mother tongue, cautioning against turning an inclusive India into an exclusive one.

In summary, Kamal Haasan’s recent remarks highlight his steadfast opposition to policies he perceives as threats to linguistic diversity and federalism. By coining the term “Hindia,” he underscores his concern over Hindi imposition and supports measures to ensure fair representation for southern states in parliamentary matters.
